The Paraburdoo Māori Culture Club hosted an event to celebrate the Matariki.

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars that rises in winter and, for many Māori, heralds the start of a new year.

Spanning over 3 days, the event showcased a traditional Hāngī inviting the community to join and bring meat and vegetables with them.

President of the Paraburdoo Maori Culture Club Tapapa Lewis said Hāngī is all about bringing and sharing.

“Everybody felt part of it and as you said as we gather and we joined in because you're bringing something to the Hāngī,” he said.

“You feel part of what it is and that's what Matariki is really about for us here.”

“Is to learn together, to be a part of, to celebrate, to remember.”
