Traditional dancers from the Kimberley are travelling from Kununnura to Perth with a wrecked ute which has been turned into a musical instrument.

Tura New Music and the WA Museum are on the road with ‘The Journey Down’, which was performed in Ieramagadu/Roebourne on the weekend.

The ute is the centrepiece of the performance which features music, dance and art.

The car was made years ago by musician Jon Rose in collaboration with the Warmun community.

It is on its way to a new home in the WA Museum, where the tour will end.

Mirriwoong man and cultural advisor Chris Griffiths said ‘The Journey Down’ was a great collaboration between artists of different cultures.

“When we travel, we’re not doing this for ourselves,” Mr Griffiths said.

“We’re doing this for the mob back home. Taking our culture and our history and stories to the rest of the world.”
