KIMBERLEY COUNCIL INTRODUCES TWO-WAY SCIENCE PROGRAM

Kimberley Land Council is working with Bardi Jawi, Nyul Nyul and Ngurrara ranger teams to deliver education programs to four schools across the Kimberley.

Programs are designed to cover content that relates to caring for the country, including resources such as seasonal calendars and sustainability.

Programs include subjects based around the day-to-day work of rangers like indigenous land management, and wildlife monitoring and include activities such as fishing.

The programs are designed by the community and remote schools alongside rangers to make it more engaging for the students.

Eduardo Maher, Two-Way Science Program coordinator for Kimberley Land Council said it is the feedback from the community and rangers that led to the creation of this program

He said the goal of the program is to increase the retention rate for students back into the classroom.

“On Country trips that we have with the ranges we take them out into the field to show them what the ranges do and how it connects back to both culture and what's happening and during the seasons and how we can make those links back to the classroom is what really gets the kids”
