KIDS HELPLINE EMPHASIZES CHILD PROTECTION DURING NATIONAL CHILD PROTECTION WEEK

BY ASAD KHAN

In observance of National Child Protection Week, the Kids Helpline has reiterated that child protection is a shared responsibility beyond this dedicated week.

Tony Fitzgerald, a spokesperson for Kids Helpline, underscored the importance of ongoing vigilance and collective effort in safeguarding the children.

“We’re trying to convey that child protection is everyone’s responsibility,”

“It’s not limited to one week a year. Every conversation about child safety contributes to creating a safer environment for young people.”

He said the organization has reported a troubling increase in the number of young people contacting them regarding child abuse. Currently, about one in fourteen contacts relate to abuse, a rise from previous years.

“We really want to emphasize that this is a significant issue for our children and young people, and there is a support avenue available to them.”

“We see everything from young people at risk of abuse in their home environments to those being groomed online. We also handle emergency interventions where immediate action is required to protect a young person from harm.”

In emergencies, the Kids Helpline coordinates closely with external services such as police and ambulance.

“We have strong protocols with police, ambulance, and child safety services. When we assess that a young person is at immediate risk, we work to connect them directly with the appropriate authorities to ensure swift intervention.”

Mr Fitzgerald said the National Child Protection Week is a vital platform for Kids Helpline to raise awareness about available support services and the importance of community involvement in child protection.

“This week helps us highlight the significance of child protection and provides critical information to young people and families about where to seek help,”

The organization encourages collaboration with other entities to strengthen child protection efforts.

Fitzgerald said, “We work closely with various organizations in the child protection sector. Through these collaborations, we ensure that no matter what support a young person needs, they are aware of where to turn for help.”

National Child Protection Week amplifies the message of child safety. It fortifies the support network available to those in need, reinforcing Kids Helpline’s commitment to safeguarding children and providing essential resources.
