WA Labor MP Kevin Michel has claimed victory in the Pilbara seat nearly two weeks after the state election. With 65% of votes counted, Michel holds a narrow lead over Liberal candidate Amanda Kailis, leading by just 351 votes.

He has reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his election promises, particularly for the region. One of his key priorities is securing the naming of the recently opened dialysis hub at Karratha Health Campus in honour of the late Yindjibarndi elder, T. Daniel.

Ms Daniel was a passionate advocate for a dialysis unit in Karratha, tirelessly working for improved healthcare services for her community.

The new dialysis facility, which began operating in February, provides essential care for patients requiring regular dialysis.

Mr Michel confirmed that the matter of naming the hub after Ms. Daniel has been discussed with the previous health minister, and he is now focused on bringing the issue to the attention of the new WA Health Minister.

“Some of the stalwarts of Roebourne have brought that to my attention, and yes, I have already had that conversation with the previous minister. But now, with the new minister coming in, it’s time to move forward with that conversation,” he said.

In addition to the naming proposal, Michel announced plans to expand the facility with the addition of four more dialysis chairs, further increasing the unit's capacity to support local patients.

The commitment to improving healthcare services in the Pilbara reflects Michel's ongoing focus on the region's needs, with the naming of the dialysis unit serving as a lasting tribute to Ms. Daniel's legacy.
