TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER, MEDIA LEGEND, DIES

Aboriginal and TSI media broadcasters are mourning the passing of a trailblazer for First Nations Media Australia. 

Jim Remedio passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends in Naarm country last week.  He was 79 years old. 

Mr. Remedio was a Torres Strait Islander man and a respected Elder.

Mr. Remedio worked at Larrakia radio in Darwin, Yamatji Media in Carnarvon (Western Australia) and he spent many years at Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association overseeing media training to keep up with the high demand for content creation.

The CEO of First Nations Media Australia, Shane Hearn says that Mr. Remedio’s passing is a huge loss for Indigenous media.

“It was very sad news to hear,” he said.

“One of the first meetings I had was with Jim, I was really taken with his generosity to talk about the sector. He’s quite frank, as you would imagine.”

Mr. Remedio was a co-winner of the Michael Law Award by the Community broadcast of Australia award in 2022.
