JALENS JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE: WHATEVER IT TAKES

A Journey of Resilience: Finding Strength Through Culture and Sobriety

Jalen Oakley dreamed of donning the colours of the Essendon Bombers, aspiring to become an AFL player. But life threw him challenges that led him down a rocky path, filled with struggles that many young people can relate to. This is a story of resilience, cultural connection, and the transformative power of sobriety.

Early Aspirations and Challenges

Growing up, football was more than just a sport; it was a lifeline. Yet, as he navigated the ups and downs of primary and high school across various states and cities, bullying and feelings of isolation began to take their toll. At just 16, the unexpected loss of his father to suicide marked a turning point that spiralled him into a world of drugs and alcohol. What once was a dream of a bright future became overshadowed by a series of poor choices that led to violence and criminal activities.

A Life-Altering Incident

Years later, a traumatic brain injury resulting from an assault in Perth became a wake-up call. This life-threatening event forced him to confront the demons he had long avoided. In the aftermath, he embarked on a challenging rehabilitation journey, relearning how to walk, talk, and eat. Yet, amidst this struggle, a fire was ignited within him—a desire to reclaim his life and help others who might be facing similar battles.

Embracing Culture and Healing

Culturally, he identifies deeply with both his Aboriginal and Māori heritage. Growing up, he was connected to both sides of his family, with his father's teachings instilling in him a respect for tradition, spirituality, and the healing power of culture. A pivotal moment came when he participated in the Kapa Haka Festival in New Zealand, where he felt an overwhelming sense of belonging and purpose. This connection to his roots became a source of strength as he navigated his recovery journey.

The Path to Sobriety

Today, he proudly shares that he has been sober for seven years from drugs and four years from alcohol. His message to those struggling with addiction is simple yet powerful: “Give it a go. You don’t need substances to be happy.” He encourages individuals to embrace their authentic selves, surround themselves with supportive people, and recognise that they are not alone in their struggles.

Empowering the Next Generation

As a father and an older sibling, he has taken it upon himself to empower the youth in his community. He shares his story to inspire the next generation. He wants young people to know that they have the power to change their lives and make positive choices, no matter their circumstances.

His clothing brand, launched in 2022, serves as a platform not only for self-expression but also as a means to connect with others. With designs that reflect his cultural heritage, he aims to create a sense of pride and belonging in a world that can often feel isolating.

A Final Message of Hope

His advice to anyone who feels lost or overwhelmed is clear: “Don’t give up. Reach out for help.” Life can be challenging, but there is always hope and support available. By fostering connections with others and embracing their cultural identities, individuals can find strength and purpose in their journeys.

As he continues to heal and grow, he remains committed to his mission: to empower others, promote mental health awareness, and remind everyone that life is what you make it. Through the trials he has faced, he has emerged not just as a survivor but as a beacon of hope for others seeking to reclaim their lives.
