INDIGENOUS ELDERS LAUNCH CASE AGAINST COMMONWEALTH
On Friday, two Torres Strait Islander Elders submitted evidence to the Federal Court claiming the Australian government failed to prevent climate change impacts and breached its duty of care.
The two Elders, Pabai Pabai and Paul Kabai are seeking a court order requiring the government to prevent harm to their communities by cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Pabai Pabai explained that rising water levels from climate change posed a serious threat to his community.
The case is expected to reach a decision in 2024.
