INDIGENOUS BOXER ALEX WINWOOD'S INSPIRING JOURNEY: RISING FROM SETBACKS

In an unforgettable display of resilience, professional Indigenous boxer Alex Winwood faced the longest-reigning world champion in an exciting match that showcased both his skill and determination.
Despite being knocked down twice and sustaining a broken nose, Winwood fought through all 12 rounds, ultimately losing by just one point.
"This fight wasn’t a setback; it’s the start of something greater," he remarked, reflecting on his performance.
As a young Noongar boy, Winwood realized a lifelong dream by competing for a world title in his hometown of Perth.
"I really can't put it into words. It was the most proud moment of my life," he said.
The support from the crowd was overwhelming, and he emphasized the significance of having a large Indigenous audience present.
"It made it so much more special," he added, highlighting the importance of representation in sports.
Winwood's journey into boxing began in high school, where he was introduced to the sport through amateur classes.
His coach inspired him, leading him to participate in multiple amateur tournaments, ultimately totaling around 60 fights.

When asked about the fight against Thammanoon Niyomtrong, Winwood described it as a valuable learning experience.
"I felt I was very close to winning," he said.
“Once the final bell went, I was kind of emotionless. I knew I had missed an opportunity, but sharing the ring with such a great champion was a pleasure."
Winwood expressed his desire for a rematch in the future, indicating his unwavering commitment to his boxing career.
