INAUGURAL DRAGON BOAT RACE AT COSSACK
The first ever Dragon Boat Race Festival in Cossack will be held on October 2nd to 3rd, with organisers callings for locals to come up to participate in this celebration of Chinese and Japanese culture.
Teams of up to 15 people, or individuals looking to have fun and make new friends will find themselves in a unique race.
Roebourne local, Marnie Alafasio has been involved in Dragon Boat racing for several years and says anyone can participate.
“We had 14 paddlers this last weekend and we were at various ranges of Fitness.
But once you're in the boat and you're all paddling, we went like the wind we nearly flew across the water. So as long as you're into a bit of fun and you don't mind twisting your hips and you know, smashing of paddle in the water the level of Fitness, it's not the an Olympic sport.
And what is the key to keep an entire time and becoming as one and Unison when rowing well the actual key is they sit a drummer on the front of the boat just in front of the Dragons head and they Bang a Big drum and every time that drum hits the water you hit the paddle into the water and when you go far when you go together you go far and you go fast if you don't have a drummer.”
