A Karayarra elder wants to know whether the compulsory ID scan for people buying takeaway liquor in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Goldfields is then retained.

However a spokesman for the minister responsible moved quickly to reassure people it was not.

According to Pat Mason, if such information were kept it could be hacked by identity thieves.

“Your details should not be recorded in some way so somebody can access it,” she said.

A spokesman for Racing and Gaming minister Tony Buti said no data was retained from the bottle shop ID scans.

“Once identification is scanned, the name and date of birth is cross referenced against the details of people on the BDR database,” he said.

Ms Mason’s comments came as the public consultation into the Banned Drinkers Register nears its final week.
