IAN BURNS: AWARD-WINNING SINGER-SONGWRITER AND HORSE CHIROPRACTOR BALANCING MUSIC AND HEALING
BY MIRANDA SAUNDERS
Ian Burns is an award-winning singer-songwriter from the North Coast of New South Wales who has made his mark in the Australian country music scene since 2014. His album Two Sides of Me reached the top 10 in the traditional country music charts, while his song "Think Again" earned the Tamworth Singers Association Award for Best Song in the Local Hero section in 2021. Alongside his music career, Ian also works as a horse chiropractor, combining his passion for horses and healing.
Ian’s love for singing started during childhood when he and his family would sing along to old country tunes on long drives. However, it wasn’t until later in life, at 40, that he picked up a guitar for the first time. Music quickly became his outlet for expression, helping him deal with personal struggles and find healing through songwriting.
Alongside his music career, Ian is also a trained horse chiropractor. His father, a chiropractor for humans, inspired him to pursue a similar path, but for animals. Ian’s natural connection with horses led him to study horse chiropractic, blending his two passions.
Balancing music and his chiropractic work can be challenging, but living on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales has given Ian some peace. Surrounded by nature, he enjoys a laid-back lifestyle with his family, including his son and grandchildren, who live nearby.
In a candid moment, Ian shares his experience with melanoma and stresses the importance of regular skin checks and sun safety. Despite being careful, he says it’s important to remain vigilant about your skin.
Ian plans to release a new single early in 2025 and is excited about recording more music. He recently performed with a band in Tamworth, and the experience reminded him of the joy that music brings, no matter the challenges.
Before the interview wraps, Ian performs his song "Wildflowers," which he co-wrote with Lyn Bowtel during the Academy of Country Music. The song holds a special place in his heart, and while Lyn couldn’t be there, Ian reflects on the collaborative effort behind the track.
Ian’s music continues to connect with audiences, with his honest lyrics capturing the essence of country life. His blend of music and chiropractic work reflects his passion, resilience, and love for both horses and songwriting.
