HOW TO FISH RESPONSIBLY IN THE PILBARA

Michael Dunn in the Ngaarda Radio studio.

In the Pilbara, we love our fishing, but it's important we do it responsibly to protect our unique marine life.

Michael Dunn is a Fisheries and Marine Officer in the Pilbara for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).

Mr Dunn joined Chez Coulthard live on the Ngaarda Breakfast Show.

“At the moment, there’s a lot of netting happening,” said Mr Dunn.

“All netting is illegal throughout the Pilbara and Kimberley. The netting is illegal because it’s so aggressive it kills everything that goes in the net. The really protected species, like sawfish, which are critically endangered species throughout the world, we just really have to make sure they’re looked after.”

Mr Dunn pointed out fishers can still use cast nets.
