In the Kimberley, about eight Halls Creek families in danger of losing their kids to the welfare system will have counseling and support to keep them at home, WA Communities minister Simone McGurk says.

“It’s either to prevent kids coming into care, if they are very close to coming into care there are concerns about the safety of the children, or they have come into care for a short period of time and we’re trying to get those kids reunified if that can be done safely,” she said.

Ms McGurk announced $350,000 this week to provide enough Aboriginal staff to support about eight families in a 12-month pilot program.

The work will be done by Halls Creek Aboriginal corporation Jungarni Jutiya and welfare agency Key Assetts.
