In the Pilbara, Port Hedland community members have raised over $23,000 for the owner of a boxing gym that burnt down in what police believe was a deliberately lit fire.

Lewis Que Ming, better known as China, had operated China’s Boxing Gym for more than a decade before it burnt down earlier this month.

The gym was known as a safe haven for many young people in Hedland.

Community member Vikki Chadwick-Dunne has helped raise funds for China through a fundraising event held on the weekend and GoFundMe page.

She said she hopes the funds will be enough to get the gym up and running again.

“The whole community has been great,” she said.

“We’ve had builders and chippies say that if [China gets] the approval to get the building fixed they’ll give their time to help do it so that he can use that money raised to buy equipment.

We can get the building done, basically just doing jobs of love to help him out.”
