Greens Deputy Leader Mehreen Faruqi has commenced legal proceedings against One Nations Senator Pauline Hanson over a racially offensive comment she posted on Twitter.

Senator Faruqi is suing Hanson under the Racial Discrimination Act in response to a tweet Hanson made in September last year stating that she should “Piss off back to Pakistan.”

Senator Faruqi was born in Pakistan and says dealing with racism is nothing new for her.

“I have taken on bullies my whole life and I am of the firm belief that if you have the power to make positive change, you should use it for the benefit of the community,” she said.

“I refuse to let Senator Hanson get away with racist bullying and harassment.”

If the case is successful, Hanson would have to pay $150,000 to a not-for-profit of Faruqi’s choice, plus costs, and undertake anti-racism training.
