GOVERNMENT TO SOFTEN STANCE ON 501
Federal Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has instructed his department to closely consider an individual’s connection to the Australian Community when deciding if they should be deported, according to a spokesperson from the Minister's office.
Under section 501 of the Migration Act, any Australian visa can be cancelled if an individual is found guilty of serious offences.
Tissa Clark is a Maori member of the Roebourne community. As somebody who’s family have been impacted by section 501, she welcomes the changes.
When I found out about it this morning I was elated thinking that perhaps my cousin could come back,” she said.
