A Mulgana family is angry at the way they were treated over three days when many relatives returned to Denham.

Del Wedding, who is a member of the Tittums family, said they were there for two consecutive funerals for two of her nephews who had died in Geraldton and Karratha.

She said many stores closed, the pub they had booked for the wake mysteriously closed for two days, and the owner of the local bottle shop was given five minutes’ notice of a three-day ban on liquor sales.

“My mother’s been there over 70 years and my auntie’s been there over 80 years,” she said. “And they’re all angry because this is the first time ever in Shark Bay that something has happened like this.”

Mrs Wedding said the family was now seeking an explanation about the heavy handed treatment.

“I would like it put out there about how racist Shark Bay has turned into be,” she said. “Because after our funerals had finished on the Saturday … Shark Bay had a fishing fiesta and the whole town opened up dead on 12 o’clock Sunday afternoon.”

Police have been contacted for comment.
