On Saturday on Noongar boodja, the Council of Fremantle celebrated One Day as a more inclusive alternative to Australia Day.

One Day celebrates national unity as well as Indigenous history, culture, people and art.

The Fremantle council first held One Day in 2017 after a consultation process with Aboriginal elders.

Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said alternatives to Australia Day had become more socially accepted since One Day was introduced in 2017.

“I think it’s incredible how much the world has changed on this issues over the last 5 years” she told Ngaarda Media.

“I recall a lot of very angry and upset emails when we initially took this difference approach. People felt like it was just completely out of line for Fremantle to go down this path and now you pick up the newspaper, a very mainstream newspaper and read editorials saying the 26th of January is no longer a day we can come together and celebrate as a nation.”
