FIRST INDIGENOUS SUPERHERO UNIVERSE SHARES LANGUAGE AND CULTURE WITH THE WORLD
BY CHEZ COULTHARD AND MEGAN BOYCE
Indigiverse is the first all-Indigenous Superhero Universe created in comic book form.
The first comic in the series, ‘Dark Heart #1’, was launched last year and it was a huge success.
This year, ‘Dark Heart #2’ was launched at Perth Comic-Con.
Co-Creator, Scott Wilson is a proud Gooniyandi and Gadgerong man from the remote Muludja community (east of Fitzroy Crossing, WA) who grew up in Broome on Yawuru Country.
Mr Wilson uses inspiration from his background to weave his tales which follow a young First Nations boy that has been displaced in Sydney.
All the language in the books are Gooniyandi, making this series the first ever comic to have Aboriginal language written in its pages, “all translated and protected and preserved forever in these comic books,” according to Mr Wilson.
Galaru, the Dreamtime serpent, is a character within the series.
“Galaru is water: He’s the protector of water, and that’s why we hold a lot of protection to our rivers and our water systems,” he said.
“We fight for that protection because much like our veins in our body, it is us. We are that water, we are Galaru.’"
Mr Wilson hopes that the ‘Dark Heart’ comic book series will bring a good representation of Aboriginal heritage into the pop culture world.
“Across the planet, people will know that our First Nations culture still exists here in Australia,” he said.
“We're the oldest living culture in the world, and it still exists. Our language is still spoken, our stories are still told. I wanted to create something that we can bring people on that journey with us.”
