ERIN BORTHWICK’S JOURNEY OF GIVING: DONATING HAIR TO HELP CHILDREN IN NEED
Erin Borthwick, a logistics administrator for a crane company in Tom Price, is making a heartfelt decision to donate her hair as part of a fundraising effort for a children's charity. Erin, who had previously shaved her head a few years ago, decided to take this step after growing her hair back. "I’ve always felt that I have nice, thick hair, and I knew there were people in need, including children with various illnesses, who could benefit from a wig," she shared. This time around, Erin wanted to do more than just donate; she aimed to raise funds alongside the hair donation to support the cause.
After much contemplation, Erin chose to support Variety – the Children’s Charity, an organization that helps children battling serious health conditions by providing wigs and offering extra care and education. "I decided to donate my hair to a children’s charity this time because, growing up, kids already struggle with their identity. If you're a sick child, losing your hair can really impact your confidence and sense of belonging," Erin explained. She believes that providing a wig can give these children a sense of normalcy, helping them feel confident and more integrated into society without the stigma of illness.
For Erin, this experience is about more than just hair; it's a chance to inspire others and challenge societal norms about beauty. "I want young girls, in particular, to understand that beauty isn’t defined by long, luscious hair. You can feel confident and pretty regardless of how you look," she said. Erin’s journey also reflects her personal growth, as she has embraced her shaved head in the past, using it as a symbol of empowerment. "I want to show others that it’s okay to break away from stereotypes. If more people embraced who they are, it would create a more accepting world," Erin concluded. Through her donation, she hopes to inspire others to contribute, no matter how big or small, to help those in need.
