ELDERS’ STORIES KEPT ALIVE

Antoinette Roe and Normal Lee

Visitors to Carnarvon are invited to visit an exhibition of cultural stories by five elders representing five of the Gascoyne region’s language groups.

Curator Toni Roe said she and Norma Lee interviewed Gwen Peck, Betty Fletcher, Bella Randall, John Dale and Thomas Dodd and their stories have now been preserved in the new exhibit.

“You hold a head phone up to your ear and you just click on what story you want to listen to and it plays through for about five minutes,” she said. “It’s like a slide show that goes through as they’re talking. Photos will come up of what they’re talking about.”

Ms Roe said “Untouchable Stories of the Gascoyne” is now a permanent exhibition at Gwoonwardu Mia Aboriginal Heritage and Cultural Centre.
