A Ballardong Noongar activist from Western Australia travelled to Lutruwita/Tasmania last month to join protests against native forest logging.

Desmond Blurton joined campaigners from the Bob Brown Foundation at a blockade in Tasmania’s central highlands.

The area is habitat for the endangered swift parrot.

Mr Blurton says the swift parrot is under threat from Sustainable Timber Tasmania.

“They are logging these sacred tribal lands for chipping, and exporting that,” he said.

“That’s wrong that capitalism is getting too much greed over our tribal lands, especially for the animals such as the swifts that need to have their home.”

According to its website, Sustainable Timber Tasmania is developing a swift parrot management plan.

This week, the Tasmanian Supreme Court granted a temporary injunction to stop Sustainable Timber Tasmania logging in an area of forrest that is habitat to the swift parrot.
