CALL TO REFORM JURY SYSTEM

A Noongar man says it is not appropriate for Aboriginal people to be tried in court before a jury full of non-Aboriginal people and wants to see the system change.

Desmond Blurton, who is Deputy Chair of the WA Deaths in Custody Watch Committee, said juries acquitted too many killers of Aboriginal people.

Mr. Blurton said, “They are getting let off with the help of all-white juries, this is wrong this is racist and should not be tolerated in a fair society.”

In 2013 the Northern Territory Law Reform Commission recommended changes to the system after the NT Supreme Court asked the Attorney-General to examine ways to get a broader community representation on Territory juries.

Ngaarda Media understands these have never been acted upon.
