BANKSIA HILL PROTESTERS CALL FOR BETTER CONDITIONS
A protest was held at a WA detention facility over the weekend, calling for better conditions for detained youth, following a riot the previous week.
On Sunday, protesters gathered outside Banksia Hill Youth Detention Centre in Perth to demand better conditions for young detainees.
Protestors say many detainees in Banksia Hill have serious health problems, including FASD, and are calling for a more sympathetic approach.
Protest organiser and National Suicide Prevention & Trauma Recovery Project Director Megan Krakouer condemned Premier Mark McGowan’s likening of the riot to terrorism.
“Enough’s enough, and McGowan needs to show a bit of empathy and compassion,” she said.
“He chooses to demonise these kids, he’s spitting out to the public ‘They’re rapists, they’re murderers’.
“I’ve got nephews and grandsons in that place, they’re not rapists, they’re not murderers.
“Some of the nephews and the little grannies there, they are soaked in trauma.”
