ALBANESE WARNS OF SCARE CAMPAIGN ON VOICE
The Prime Minister has dismissed concerns the Indigenous Voice to Parliament could lead to legal challenges, saying critics are resorting to a scare campaign.
Opponents to the Voice have raised concerns that allowing the body to make representations to ‘executive government’, which includes ministers and the public service, would slow decision-making and risk High Court challenges.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said previous acknowledgements of Indigenous people from government had led to better outcomes, despite scare campaigns about High Court challenges.
“Did the apology create more unity or less?” he asked.
“In my view, it made us a better nation, so will constitutional recognition.”
A bill to determine details of the Voice has been introduced to Parliament this morning.
