ABORIGINAL WOMAN WINS CANARVON FEATURE RACE

In an Australian first Canaravon Race Club has recognised traditional owners at their Ladies Day event on the weekend. Aboriginal woman Peta Edwards won the feature race over the weekend putting the icing on the cake for a day celebrating, culture, fashion, art, and families that have been involved in racing for many years

Tessa Daly from the Carnarvon Race Club said, “Peta Edwards is still a jockey at the moment so she won the race on the weekend which made it even more special actually.”

The event was the first race meet to do a welcome to country in Australia and a mural with artwork from five different families.

Ms Daly says the Canarvon Racing Club now has the name “Racing on Country” trademarked and they are the first Australian race club to acknowledge a day like this. They have ten race meets a year and the first will be their indigenous meeting.
