A former Aboriginal mission site east of Perth received State Heritage Status yesterday.

Djuringe Mooranoppin in the Wheatbelt town of Kellerberin is socially and culturally significant to the local Noongar community.

The State Government said the site highlights the continuation of traditional culture despite the historical legacy of discriminatory government policies enacted to control and segregate Aboriginal people.

The Aboriginal Affairs Minister Tony Buti said he commended the Noongar community for retaining their continuing connection to country against adversity.

Heritage Minister David Templeman said that the site receiving Heritage Status is a vital inclusion of Aboriginal culture.

"The addition of Djuringe Mooranoppin, Kellerberrin to the State Register of Heritage Places is a vital inclusion that captures the continuation of Aboriginal culture and practices in times when Government policies resulted in many Aboriginal people being disconnected from their culture,” he said.
