Cameron Bell, a dedicated volunteer at Marine Rescue Dampier, the call to serve stems from a deep-seated passion for water and a commitment to community.

"I’ve always loved being around the water," Cameron recalls, reflecting on a journey that began with lifeguarding on the East Coast. After relocating to the stunning Kimberley region, he discovered Marine Rescue and signed up about six years ago, embarking on a mission he hasn’t looked back from.

Cameron is driven by the organization’s noble purpose: helping others during their toughest moments. "It's just a great organization to be in," he explains. "Turning out to people on their worst days and providing a service that gives back to the community is incredibly fulfilling."

However, the vastness of the Pilbara region presents unique challenges, especially when organizing training sessions for new volunteers. "Sometimes new volunteers have to wait a bit for training sessions to come together," Cameron notes. "But we've implemented good procedures to ensure everyone gets the same high-quality training." This commitment to standardization proves invaluable during annual search and rescue exercises, where teams from different groups collaborate, showcasing the effectiveness of their joint training efforts.

One of the most rewarding aspects of Cameron’s role is working with youth in emergency services. "The enthusiasm and willingness to learn from the young cadets is truly uplifting," he shares. The youth program plays a crucial role in preparing future leaders, with many cadets eventually joining various emergency services and acquiring essential skills.

A particularly memorable moment for Cameron involved a cadet who, during a boating incident, guided a distressed family through emergency procedures. This real-world application of their training not only reinforced its importance but also inspired other young people to consider a future in emergency services.

Cameron’s dedication exemplifies the spirit of Marine Rescue Dampier, where volunteers come together to make a tangible difference in their community. His journey is a testament to the impact of service, inspiring both individuals and the community as a whole.
