TRUCKIES ON THE FRONT LINE

The transport industry is on the frontline, playing a vital role in moving goods into and around the State, and also hauling waste and collecting rubbish locally.

With the travel bans in place from midnight Tuesday this week, the roads are absolutely dead quiet, says Pilbara Heavy Haulage truck driver, Heather Jones.

‘The only people you pass on the highway are the trucks and the odd work vehicle that’s probably involved in the oil, gas and mining industry. All of those truck bays are free for us to park in for our mandatory rest stops after 5 hours’.

However, due to changes arising from Government closures of restaurants, issues developed for truck drivers including reduced food access and options, and reduced rest and hygiene services. About this, Ms Jones said some progress to loosen restrictions at roadhouses had been made this week.

“Two days ago Senator Sterle was involved in a decision by parliament to open up all those restaurants in the truck stops, so that’s been really awesome because I think what the general public doesn't know is we live in our trucks and after about 3 days you run out of food. And obviously every single one of us would like a shower, but not everyone is equipped to be able to have a shower, carry enough water and a shower on their trucks.”

Reports on the difficulties faced by truckies because of government measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 had reached Shadow Assistant Labor Minister for Road Safety, WA Senator Glen Sterle. He told BigRigs last week that while the government recognises the vital role truckies play, it had “failed to come up with a plan to address the needs and working conditions of Australia’s truck drivers and transport operators”.

Another challenge was the difficulty in obtaining protective hand-sanitisers and ‘Wet Ones’ and Ms Jones called for donations to essential services, including truck drivers, as they are the people that truly need those items, when all other West Australians were being asked to stay home.

“If you are at home you probably don’t need it, so if you have got a box of 50, maybe make that known to, maybe to the radio station, so those of us that are in this high risk area can cope and disinfect and sanitise everything that we need to. In our trucks, as required by most of the companies that we work for, we need to sanitise our steering wheel, indicators, brakes, arm rests, door handles and everything so there’s no cross contamination.”

Ms Jones says the job can be a stressful and lonely one, and truck drivers must also think about the everyday things they touch when they are not in their trucks.

“We are in the front line, and even the places we’ve got to stop to fuel up and use the fuel pump, and if you are in using toilets, you know, all the things, the light switches, the door handles, the button on the toilet , all those things become a place that harbours germs and could harbour the coronavirus. So these poor truck drivers are operating on probably 99% stress level”.

The McGowan Government has announced new measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 to the Kimberley region.

Travel restrictions are already in place in the Kimberley region but due to the seriousness of the situation, additional stronger measures are needed to stop the movement of people between towns or local government areas.

From midnight tonight (or 11.59pm Thursday), new boundaries, in line with the four local government areas (shires of Broome, Derby West Kimberley, Wyndham East Kimberley, Halls Creek) within the Kimberley region will be in place.

People must stay in their local government area. The existing exemptions apply, such as provision of essential services or supplies, freight, medical reasons or compassionate grounds.

Currently, residents returning to their home in the Kimberley must self-isolate for 14 days.

The State Government has sent a nursing team to Broome Hospital to assist staff on the ground with the response. Additional support will be sent to Broome soon.

Kimberley residents are urged to stay home and cease all non-essential travel and activity. Indoor or outdoor activities of more than two people should be avoided, unless exempted.

Anyone displaying symptoms should contact their local health facility immediately.
